Car care tips

5-steps to give your pride and joy a fresh start

Spring has just come around in most parts of Australia, but your car would still be feeling the effects of the colder months. Winter driving takes a toll on both the interior and exterior of your vehicle, making spring the perfect time for a thorough clean-up. A thorough, deep clean will not only refresh your car’s appearance but will also protect its longevity and maintain its value. Here are some essential tips to get your car looking and feeling brand new as we step into the warmer months.

1. Start with the exterior: Give your car a new shine

The first step in your car’s spring cleaning is tackling the exterior. Even if Australian winters might be mild compared to other parts of the world, there’s still likely a build-up of grime, dust, and road debris that can affect your car’s paintwork.

Wash away winter residue: Begin with a comprehensive wash. Use a pH-balanced car shampoo to gently remove dirt, mud, and other residues. Focus on areas where debris tends to accumulate, such as the wheel arches and lower panels. A high-pressure hose can help loosen stubborn dirt, while a snow foam cannon or lance to pair with this is a great investment. Snow cannons produce a thick layer of foam that clings to the vehicle’s surface, effectively loosening dirt, grime, and other contaminants before you hand wash.

Don’t forget underneath: One of the most overlooked areas is the undercarriage. Dust, mud and grime can accumulate underneath, potentially causing rust over time. A good underbody wash can prevent long-term damage.

Clay bar for a smooth finish: After washing, you can use a clay bar to remove embedded contaminants that regular washing won’t get rid of. This step is crucial for maintaining a smooth finish and preparing your car for waxing.

Wax on, shine off: Applying a coat of high-quality wax not only gives your car a shiny finish but also provides a protective barrier against UV rays, bird droppings, and other environmental elements. Waxing your car in spring is an investment that helps maintain the paintwork’s integrity through the hot Australian summer.

2. Wheels and tyres: A critical component

Wheels and tyres are often neglected during regular cleaning, but they require special attention post-winter. They endure the brunt of road conditions and accumulate a lot of brake dust, dirt, and grime.

Deep clean the wheels: Use a dedicated wheel cleaner and a soft brush to remove built-up brake dust and grime. Make sure the wheel cleaner is acid-free to prevent it from harming your wheel’s surface – sticking with the major brands and doing your research before purchase is recommended. When cleaning, pay attention to the wheel wells, where dirt tends to hide. Clean wheels not only look great but also help prolong the life of your tyres.

Check your tyres: Spring is also a great time to check tyre pressure and tread depth. Fluctuating temperatures can affect tyre pressure, so ensure they’re inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended level. Properly maintained tyres improve fuel efficiency and ensure safer driving conditions.

3. Interior deep clean: Refresh and revitalise

Your car’s interior deserves just as much attention as the exterior. A thorough interior clean not only makes your drive more pleasant but also helps in maintaining the condition of seats, carpets, and other materials.

Clear out the clutter: Start by removing any rubbish and unnecessary items from the car. Winter often means an accumulation of things like jackets, umbrellas, and other items that aren’t needed as the weather warms up.

Vacuum thoroughly: Use a high-powered vacuum to clean the carpets, seats, and mats. Pay special attention to crevices, under the seats, and other hard-to-reach places where dirt and crumbs may have settled over the colder months.

Clean upholstery and surfaces: Depending on your interior type—fabric, leather, or vinyl—use the appropriate cleaner to remove stains and spills. Fabric seats benefit from a deep steam clean, while leather interiors require conditioning to prevent cracking and fading. A leather conditioner on top will help protect the surface for the coming months.

Dust dashboards and consoles: Use a microfiber cloth and a mild, pH neutral cleaner to wipe down the dashboard, centre console, and any other hard surfaces. Avoid using harsh chemicals that can damage the materials.

4. Windows and mirrors: Crystal clear visibility

Clean windows and mirrors are essential for safe driving, particularly as we move into spring with its sunnier days.

Streak-free glass: Use a quality glass cleaner to ensure your windows are spotless, both inside and out. Consider using a newspaper or a clean microfiber cloth for a streak-free finish. Don’t forget the rearview and side mirrors!

Inspect wiper blades: Winter weather can be tough on wiper blades. Make sure they are in good condition, as clear visibility is crucial for safe driving. If the blades are worn or leaving streaks, consider replacing them.

5. Protect and maintain for the months ahead

Spring cleaning your car is not just about making it look good; it’s also about preparing it for the warmer months ahead.

Apply a UV protectant: Australian sun can be harsh, and UV protectant sprays can help prevent fading and cracking of your dashboard and interior plastics. This small step can make a big difference in maintaining your car’s interior over time. Look for a product that is non-greasy, non toxic and water based – avoid products with grease-producing silicone oils and petroleum distillates.
