Car Buying Advice

Petrol, diesel, hybrid or EV? Choosing the right powertrain for your driving habits

Buying a new car used to be simpler. You’d sort out the colour, agree on a price, and away you’d go. These days there’s a bigger question waiting for you before you even get to the colour: what should be under the bonnet? Petrol, diesel, hybrid, or should you go fully electric?

It’s the thing we get asked about more than almost anything else. And here’s the honest answer we always give. There’s no single best one. The right choice comes down to how you actually drive, day to day, so let’s walk through who each one really suits.

Petrol: the trusty all-rounder

Good old petrol is still the default for a reason. These cars are usually the cheapest to buy, and there’s a servo on every second corner. You already know exactly how they work, too, with no new habits to learn.

Where petrol makes the most sense is for drivers who don’t clock up huge distances. If you’re doing the school run and the odd weekend away, a petrol car keeps things cheap and easy up front. You’ll pay more at the bowser over time than some of the others, sure. But if your yearly kilometres are modest, that trade can still stack up nicely in your favour.

Diesel: the long-haul workhorse

Diesel is the one people get wrong most often, so this bit’s worth reading closely. A diesel engine loves to stretch its legs. Out on the open highway it sips fuel and pulls like a train, which is why it’s the go-to for the big 4WDs and utes, and for anyone towing a caravan or a boat.

Here’s the catch, though. Diesels hate short trips. They’ve got a part called a diesel particulate filter, or DPF, that needs a good highway run every now and then to clean itself out. Only ever drive to the shops and back? That filter clogs up, and you’re staring down an expensive headache. So diesel is brilliant if you’re racking up country kilometres or towing heavy loads. If you rarely leave the suburbs, we’d gently steer you elsewhere.

Hybrid: the city sipper

Hybrids have taken off in a big way lately, and it’s easy to see why. A hybrid pairs a normal petrol engine with an electric motor, and it sorts out the rest itself. You never plug it in. It just quietly switches between the two to save you fuel, and it’s cleverest exactly where petrol cars are thirstiest: crawling through stop-start traffic.

If your days are all traffic lights and roundabouts, a hybrid can slash your fuel bill without asking you to change a thing. Then there are plug-in hybrids, which take it a step further. These can run your short daily commute purely on electricity, then fall back on petrol for the longer hauls. The catch with a plug-in is that you’ve actually got to plug it in at home to see the benefit, so they suit folks with a driveway and a fairly short trip to work.

EV: the home-charger’s best friend

An electric car is the one everyone’s curious about, and for a lot of drivers it’s a cracker. No petrol at all. If you can charge at home overnight, especially with solar on the roof, your “fuel” cost drops to next to nothing. They’re quiet and quick off the mark, and there’s far less to go wrong mechanically.

The big question with an EV is where you’ll charge. Got off-street parking and a fairly predictable daily drive that fits inside the car’s range? You’ll wonder why you didn’t switch sooner. Long trips take a bit of planning around chargers, and remote touring is still a genuine consideration, but for the everyday suburban grind an EV is hard to beat. If you’re weighing one up for road trips, we’ve written a whole separate piece on charging across Australia that’s worth a look.

A few honest questions to ask yourself

Still not sure? Start with your weekly kilometres, and whether they’re mostly stop-start city or open highway. Think about whether you tow anything or haul a decent load. There’s your budget to weigh up as well, both up front and over the years. And the big one for hybrids and EVs: can you charge at home, or would you be leaning on public chargers? Line those up and the right camp tends to pick itself.

There’s no wrong choice here. It’s just about finding the one that fits your life. A retiree doing 8,000km a year has very different needs to a sales rep living on the motorway.

Whatever you choose, we’ll keep it humming

Here’s the thing worth remembering. Every one of these still needs looking after. Petrol and diesel have their servicing schedules, and hybrids and EVs bring their own quirks around batteries and electronics. Whatever’s driving the wheels, the brakes and tyres still wear down just the same. Picking the right powertrain is step one. Keeping it healthy is where we come in.
